Master’s programme LLM in International Business students at INNOVATHENS – Social Enterpreneurship

The Master’s programme LLM in International Business students in the context of their course module “The Role of Business in Society” visited Technopolis, City Of Athens on 23rd November 2016 along with the course tutor Mr Vesselin Todorov in order to attend a seminar about social entrepreneurship. The event was organised by  SciFY Academy (http://www.scify.gr/site/el/scify-academy/why-academy) that is an initiative for dissemination of knowledge and collaboration. The 15th SciFY Academy event about Social Entrepreneurship – First Steps took place at INNOVATHENS (http://www.innovathens.gr/innovathens/) at the Hub Of Innovation And Entrepreneurship of Technopolis, City Of Athens.

As all students are requested to invent and compile a business plan about a social enterprise, the visit was proposed by Mrs Theodora Vaiopoulou and Mrs Maria Sireti, students of the programme. During the event, the main idea and objectives of Social Entrepreneurship were presented by Mrs Matina Kanaki (photo above) and her team. Mrs Kanaki presented the terms, notions and values of social economy and entrepreneurship, underlying the differences with private companies. The second and more important part of the seminar was devoted into a workshop of creating a hypothetical social organisation, where the basic steps of creating and operating a social enterprise were utilised. Participants were requested to split in teams and work into their social enterprise idea, by compiling flowcharts. Mrs Kanaki and her team was supporting the teams and guided them though the process, answered questions and provided tips.

The students of City Unity College (photo below) formed their own team and worked into a feasible solution of a social enterprise with aim to help victims of domestic violence. The whole exercise acted as a tangible workshop, where the students had the opportunity to listen first-hand the essential parameters of the social entrepreneurship and discuss its formulation. In addition, many practical questions came up during this exercise that lead to a constructive discussion with their tutor, that will help students to complete their module assignment with more confident.
