This MA Terrorism, International Crime and Global Security is a programme that builds upon Coventry University’s expertise in the fields of Politics, International Relations, international crime and global security and City Unity College expertise in Social Networking Analysis and Economics.
This programme is born out or a collaborative European effort and focuses on both local and global aspects of Terrorism, International Crime and Global Security. It has been designed to take account of ways in which the nature of the study of International Relations has changed in the twenty-first century. This particularly applies to the post 9/11 emphasis on the ‘war on terror’ and the emergence of transnational organised crime as a key threat to the stability of society, alongside a growing number of factors that threaten global security (such as pandemics, economic inequality, poverty, environmental pollution, diseases, natural disasters, state collapse and the re-emergence of racial and religious tensions).
The programme examines these key issues in a thematic manner through the three mandatory courses: International Organised Crime, International Terrorism and Threats to Global Security. This thematic approach is complemented by other courses addressing individual case studies focussing on human trafficking, governance in the developing world and the nature of war. A distinctive feature of this programme is the inclusion of a course on Social Network Analysis (SNA), that provides an overview of major network theories and metrics with emphasis on practical SNA applications across different areas: for example, criminal intelligence analysis, criminal/terrorism investigations, national security, military intelligence, business intelligence, security risk management, and organisational behaviour and management.
Since the end of the Cold War there has been a widening in the number of threats affecting individual, group, state and international security. The programme seeks to provide students with an informed understanding of terrorism, organised crime and global security from an integrated perspective by combining traditional notions of military security with contemporary non-military threats of terrorism and trans-national organised crime. The programme provides students with an up-to-date set of courses that examine these threats. The programme has been designed to take account of the way in which the nature of the study of International Security has changed in the twenty-first century. This particularly applies to the post 9/11 emphasis on the ‘war on terror’, the emergence of international organised crime as a key threat to the stability of society and the growth in the number of factors that threaten global security, including economic inequality, poverty, environmental pollution, diseases, natural disasters, state collapse and the re-emergence of racial and religious tensions. The programme examines these key issues in a thematic manner. This thematic approach is complemented by individual case studies within the relevant courses.
The programme has been devised as both a one-year full-time programme and a part-time programme taken over 2.5 years. The mode of attendance is normally face-to-face contact with some use of online tasks/formative work (subject to pandemic restrictions if applicable). Normally the sessions are delivered intensively in afternoon classes to allow students who work to attend.

The interdisciplinary approach to the study of Global Security offered by this programme is expected to provide a wide range of career opportunities for its graduates. These are anticipated to be in the following areas: National and international policy development, government and corporate security planning, international organisations, the armed and uniformed services, business management, and non-governmental organisations. The degree will provide students with generic skills that will be relevant to broader employment opportunities in the public and private sector.

Successful applicants must normally hold a first or a second-class Honours Degree or equivalent. Candidates with degrees in subjects other than International Relations/Politics or related subjects may apply.
Applicants with non-standard qualifications, will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by Coventry University staff.
