BSc (Hons) Psychology

City Unity College, in collaboration with London Metropolitan University, offers the BSc (Hons) in Psychology programme, which is recognized by the A.T.E.E.N. department of the Greek Ministry of Education, Lifelong learning and Religious Affairs, enabling graduates to work as licensed psychologists in Greece. The course is designed to ensure you develop a thorough understanding of the core areas in psychology (biological, cognitive, developmental, social, individual differences, and research methods). You’ll also learn a wide range of academic and transferable skills that will be invaluable in future employment or postgraduate training.

Under Law 4093/12, European University degrees obtained by attending programmes in recognized / accredited Colleges are professionally recognized by the A.T.E.E.N. Department of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs in Greece.

Regarding the license to work as a psychologist, graduates of the BSc (Hons) Psychology, after applying to A.T.E.E.N. to have their professional rights recognized, they submit their papers in the region concerned and get their license to work as practitioner psychologists in Greece.

The programme’s modules are designed to provide a holistic and academic basis for the students’ learning experience and enable them to successfully continue to postgraduate studies.

In Level 4, there are 7 modules that form the basis for an introductory approach to psychology. PC4056 Biological Bases of Behaviour focuses on the basic principles of neuroscience and physiology related to behaviour. The module aims to provide students with an introduction to the fundamentals of biological psychology.

PC4053 Child Development and Behaviour aims to introduce students to some of the most influential theories in developmental psychology. Students will be introduced to some classic research that will help them to evaluate theories of development and their empirical basis.

PC4054 Cognition and Behaviour introduces students to some of the foundational theories in cognitive psychology, including a prehistory of cognition which considers earlier approaches to human thought and behaviour.

PC4009 Introduction to Research in Psychology introduces studentsto the practice of conducting and reporting research in psychology, and develops their skills in gathering, analysing and evaluating information.

PC4052 Personality aims to provide students with awareness of theories and models of personality and an understanding of how theory and research in this field can help explain individual differences in behaviour.

PC4055 Social Influences on Thinking and Behaviour provides students with an introduction to and understanding of key theories and models of social psychology in their historical and cultural context.

PC4051 Study Skills for Psychology aims to encourage students to develop practical, ethical, intellectual and interpersonal skills that are of use in many employment settings, and also provides students with a toolkit of intellectual and practical academic skills

In Level 5, there are 7 modules.

PC5054-Cognition focuses on providing students with an understanding of the internal representations and processes underlying cognition and key theories and models of cognitive psychology and related research in their historical and cultural contexts.

PC5055-Development across the Lifespan focuses on how human behaviour changes across the lifespan, emphasising changes in thinking and cognition during childhood and beyond.

PC5056-Individual Differences introduces students to classic and contemporary theories and research in topics related to personality, intelligence, and psychometrics.

PC5052-Psychobiology allows students to evaluate key biological, genetic and evolutionary theories of behaviour in their historical and cultural contexts.

PC5050-Psychology and Employment provides students with the opportunity to critically consider the nature of employment, including issues related to inclusion in the workplace and to consider alternative (e.g. anti-racist) ways of working.

PC5001-Research Design and Data Analysis in Psychology aims to introduce students to methods of psychological investigation and to develop their ability to design such investigations, to understand the ethical implications of the methods used, and to assess the data collected.

PC5067-Social and Cultural Understanding of Us and Others examines social perception and behaviour in terms of how individuals think about and seek to understand their social world through their interactions with others at the group and societal levels.

In Level 6, students undertake a Dissertation project, on their selected topic and under appropriate supervision. The Dissertation needs to be completed during the year. In addition to the Dissertation project, students will also need to select 6 modules from 7 options.

The core module is:
PC6P01-Project where students need to undertake an independent piece of research on a topic of their choosing and under appropriate supervision.

The 7 optional modules (students need to choose 6 of them) are:

PC6069-Clinical Neuroscience where students develop and integrate their knowledge of biological psychology with reference to clinical disorders.

PC6071-Clinical Psychology which promotes knowledge and understanding of the field of Clinical Psychology and psychopathology.

PC6054-Counselling Psychology introduces students to the discipline of counselling psychology as one of the main forms of applied psychological practice.

PC6051-Forensic Psychology where students are provided with a solid basis of knowledge and understanding of the application of empirical research and theory in psychology to the study of contemporary issues and processes within the criminal justice system.

PC6070-Health Psychology where students will have the opportunity to investigate the role played by physiological, psychological, social and cultural mechanisms in the causation and treatment of physical illnesses.

PC6050-Qualitative Research Methods in Psychology where students will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in qualitative research.

PC6056-Work Psychology where students will gain a critical understanding of a range of theories, models, applied research and application within work and organisational contexts.

The programme is completed within 3 (full time) or 6 years (part time) academic years; each year consists of two semesters. The programme consists of modules with 15 or 30 credits each and there is a Dissertation project in the last year of studies, which corresponds to 30 credits.

To conduct the lectures, appropriate equipment is in place consisting of video projectors and computers equipped with appropriate software. The research and statistics modules take place in appropriately equipped labs, within the campus. All students have access to the college library, the CityU E-Learning platform (where all teaching materials are stored) and London Met’s Moodle platform, which gives access to a wide range of programmes to download as well as access to an electronic library consisting of thousands of books and scientific journals. Students can also access their feedback and grades through London Met’s Moodle platform.

After successful completion of the programme, graduates can have their professional rights recognized by the Α.Τ.Ε.Ε.Ν. department of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs and get their license to work as psychologists in Greece in both the public and private sector. More specifically, graduates can work in:

  • Hospitals and private clinics;
  • Counselling centres;
  • Nursing homes;
  • Schools and organizational contexts;
  • Drug treatment centres;
  • Promoting public health and preventing illness;
  • Research centres;
  • Their own office, as self-employed psychologists.

 

Graduates can also undertake postgraduate studies in a wide range of psychology fields (e.g. forensic, health, clinical, exercise, occupational, sports etc.) in Greece and internationally.

Finally, graduates of the programme can apply for the GBC of the BPS, on an individual basis, and become practitioner psychologists in the UK, after appropriate training.

To register to the BSc (Hons) in Psychology, students need to:

  • Have a high school diploma (or equivalent) – minimum 13/20
  • Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirements
  • In exceptional cases an interview or challenge courses or entrance exams or accreditation of prior learning will be required in consultation with the programme director and/or head of the department.

 

If the applicants do not meet the registration requirements regarding English competence, they can attend intensive English courses at City Unity College, adjusted to their level and needs.

Applicants will need to submit their file, consisting of the following documents:

  • A copy of their ID card, A copy of their high school degree, certificate of English competence certificate & personal statement.

 

The applicant’s file is evaluated by the programme director and is then forwarded to London Metropolitan University. Once their registration is complete, students will receive their student id card and credentials to access the CityU and London Metropolitan University’s Moodle and e-library platform.

All courses take place in our campus in the centre of Athens, 15-17 Thiseos Str, Syntagma, 10562. We also have a campus in Patras, 5 Maizonos, 26223, Achaia.

Career Center
The Career Center, which operates at City Unity College with the support of a network of partner companies, aims to connect students to the labor market. The Career Center organizes seminars on effective C.V. writing and how to conduct an interview as well as workshops during which students get in touch with representatives of companies specializing in a wide range of areas.

All lecturers are also practitioner psychologists, promoting thus an integration between theory, research and practice.
