Information

The Hospitality and Tourism is based on high end Swiss standards and some modules take place on the premises of a fully equipped and operational hotel, with training facilities such as kitchens, restaurants and bars; as a result work-based and active learning is fully embedded into the programme and ensures the programme maintains strong links with industry.

City Unity College is in partnership with the Cardiff Metropolitan University, which has validated the Swiss Alpine Diploma. Holders of the Swiss Alpine Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management may transfer their credits and progress to the BA (Hons) International Hospitality & Tourism Management, conferred by Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK, for those who want to acquire a comprehensive knowledge and professional skills to work effectively as middle or senior executives in the hospitality and tourism industry.

In constructing the modules, the programme team has sought to ensure an appropriate balance between academic content and vocational skills. The programme seeks to provide students with the body of knowledge traditionally associated with hospitality and tourism management and to develop appropriate skills enabling students to apply such knowledge into realistic industry situations. The programme has been designed in consultation with the Advisory Board that comprises of industry representatives to ensure the currency and fitness for purpose of our curriculum to assist graduate employability.

The Programme lasts 2 years. Delivery of the curricular material will be through a blend of lectures, tutorials, practicals, seminars, workshops, events and thematic visits to hospitality and tourism establishments. Lectures are a major part of the teaching strategy for the programme and they are an effective way of delivering core material and establishing a framework for a module against which other material can be set. Learning management in a purely theoretical environment would be a very difficult task unless one has accumulated a reasonable amount of experience. This is why the operational practicals are of utmost importance. It is the philosophy of City Unity’s Hospitality & Tourism Management Department to teach management by allowing the student to experience management through practice. For example, as a restaurant manager, it is difficult to supervise a brigade of waiters when an individual has not worked as a waiter. As a general manager of a hotel it is also just as difficult to manage a restaurant manager if one has not worked in his/her position. The same scenario is true for the kitchen and other departments. Practicals play a major role in the first year of the Hotel Management programme and serve to instill a sense of responsibility, dependability, reliability, confidence and self-esteem. The aim of the practicals is to provide students with the necessary technical skills within a realistic work environment which will facilitate their transition into hotel operations during their Industry Placement and later. More specifically, at level 4, where emphasis is on Hotel Operations, the course blends hospitality practical classes with classroom theory.

All students must complete 2 work placements as an assessed part of their programme. The compulsory 10-credit modules require students to complete a minimum of 20 weeks of placement in which can either be taken in the summer vacation or during the academic year. The module is assessed through the submission of logs and a final summative reflective report. City Unity College has a Careers and Placement Office that assists the students with finding appropriate placements and liaise with employers across a range of industries. The course teams also have a range of industry contacts to assist in the placement process. The Careers and Placement Office continuously supports students during their placement, including visiting students to ensure they are getting the most of the professional and personal development experiences

The major criteria for selection of candidates are that they must demonstrate they are capable of succeeding in the programme. Applicants should hold a high school diploma (or equivalent) with a grade of at least 60% of the high school exit grade. Students whose first language is other than English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.0 standard or equivalent. Candidates who do not possess normal minimum entry qualifications are considered on an individual basis by members of the programme team. Notification of admission by exceptional entry plus a rationale is forwarded to the Registry. All applications are processed by City Unity’s Admissions Office and Alpine Center, in consultation with the Programme Director.

The Swiss Alpine Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management runs the theoretical classes in the City Unity’s modern and fully-equipped facilities in Athens and the practical classes in the 4* star Royalty Hotel, just a 5 minute walk from City Unity.
