Mastering Chartering: From Market Exploration to Ship Fixture

This program focuses on the ship chartering process, covering all key stages—from introducing the involved parties to negotiation and ship fixture. It examines the various types of charter, the charter parties and their main clauses, as well as the freight market. The program offers a detailed presentation of the voyage estimation process and the calculation of laytime, providing both practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Additionally, the negotiation process is thoroughly analyzed and supported with real-life scenarios.

The aim of the program is to provide a comprehensive understanding of ship chartering, a key source of revenue for shipping companies. Participants will gain knowledge of the processes required—from market research to the conclusion of a ship charter agreement. The theoretical and practical background acquired will enable them to advance their skills in the field of chartering.

Schedule: Every Friday, 18:00 – 21:00
Total duration of the program is 8 weeks.

The seminar will include one lecture per week, lasting 3 hours. Attendance can be either in class or on line.

After each lecture, the instructor applaud the necessary notes. Direct communication with the instructor via a CUC platform resolve any queries.

Evaluations will consist of multiple-choice tests, comprehension questions, and/or assignments.

All assessments will be conducted electronically in English within a designated time frame outside lecture hours. Incorrect answers will be accompanied by explanations.

Attendance, participation, and completion of evaluations are mandatory.

A certificate will be issued by the City Unity College Maritime Training Center, approved by DNV and Transport Malta.

Maria Giannaki, PhD candidate, holds an LLM in Commercial Dispute Resolution (University of South Wales) and a BSc in Shipping and Transport (London Metropolitan University). With extensive experience in chartering, she is the author of the book “Introduction to Shipping” (24grammata) and is writing her upcoming book, “Principles of Chartering.”
